The four male students accused of being involved in a gang rape case at a secondary school in Melaka will still be allowed to sit for their upcoming Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations, scheduled to begin on November 3.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said that despite the ongoing police investigation, the ministry remains committed to upholding every student’s right to education, in line with the principle of “education for all.”
“The SPM will proceed as usual. We want to ensure that these students do not fall behind in their studies, even as investigations continue,” she said after a special meeting with State Education, Higher Education, and Religious Affairs Executive Councillor Datuk Rahmad Mariman, and Melaka Police Chief Datuk Zulkairi Mukhtar at the Melaka State Education Department (JPN) in Bukit Beruang on Sunday.
Also present at the meeting was Education Director-General Mohd Azam Ahmad. Fadhlina confirmed that the victim, a Form Three student remains hospitalised, receiving ongoing medical treatment and psychological support before being moved to a shelter home. The minister stressed that the Ministry of Education (MOE) is prioritising the emotional and psychosocial wellbeing of everyone at the affected school, including students preparing for SPM and their teachers.
“Counsellors will be deployed to the school to assist both teachers and students so that their SPM preparations are not disrupted. This school is one of the top-performing schools in Melaka, and we are giving it our full attention,” she said.
The meeting also discussed long-term preventive and intervention measures to ensure similar incidents do not occur again in the future.
“We are focusing on strategies to manage and prevent such cases from recurring. Legal matters are fully handled by the police, while the ministry remains focused on maintaining discipline, emotional stability, and safety in schools,” she added.
Fadhlina also urged the public to be more aware and sensitive about sexual crimes among students, reminding them to respect laws protecting the personal information of minors.
“People must understand that this involves minors. We have laws that protect their identities. Parents must also take these issues seriously and pay attention to signs of sexual misconduct among students,” she emphasized.
Earlier reports revealed that the incident involved a Form Three female student who suffered trauma and refused to attend school after allegedly being gang-raped by two senior students, while two others recorded the act using a mobile phone in a classroom around 2:50 PM last week.
All four suspects have since been remanded to assist in the investigation.
