A LATE-night blaze destroyed 14 squatter homes and four shop lots, including a convenience store, along Jalan Pantai Dalam on Thursday, according to the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM).
In a statement, the department said it received a distress call regarding the fire at 11.11pm.
“A total of 36 personnel from the Pantai Fire and Rescue Station, assisted by teams from the Hang Tuah, Seputeh, and Sri Hartamas stations, were dispatched to the scene, located 7.4 kilometres away,” the statement said.
Firefighters arrived at the site within five minutes and found the squatter homes already engulfed in flames, which had spread to four adjacent shop units.
“Ninety per cent of the squatter homes were destroyed, while the upper floors of the shop lots suffered approximately 80 per cent damage and about 10 per cent at ground level,” it added.
The department noted that firefighting efforts were hampered by the area’s narrow and congested layout, as well as low water pressure.
“The blaze was brought under control by 1.49am on Friday. No casualties were reported. Overhaul operations are still ongoing,” the statement added. - August 8, 2025
