French President tweets in Bahasa Melayu after meeting Anwar for the first time

Well, Macron’s meeting with Anwar, in particular, caught the attention of Malaysians after the French President took to his official Twitter account to write fondly about the meeting in two separate posts.

In one post, he wrote in French, while in the other, he caught many Malaysians off guard by writing in Bahasa Melayu.

Sharing a photo of him shaking hands with Anwar, Macron asserted in Bahasa Melayu,

“With the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the ASEAN chairman. This first meeting will allow us to strengthen the relationship between our countries, especially in the field of energy transition, which is one of our common priorities.”

Malaysians were amused and impressed by Macron’s use of Bahasa Melayu

Rather expectedly, the replies to the tweet were full of Malaysians, who were both amused and impressed by Macron writing the social media post in Bahasa Melayu.

One commenter invited Macron to visit Malaysia and noted that the last time a French President visited our country was way back in 2017.

Another commenter took a step further by inviting Macron to ‘lepak’ while eating nasi lemak for breakfast in Kuala Lumpur.

Meanwhile, another commenter jokingly called him “Mat Cron” and asked him when he could speak in Bahasa Melayu.
