THE city government of Manila announced Saturday that health centers are open to provide free doxycycline to those who waded through floodwaters.
In a statement, the Manila Health Department urged the public to proceed to their nearest health center to obtain the free medication.
“Our health centers are currently operating solely for leptospirosis-related services; regular check-ups are temporarily suspended. If you are experiencing any health issues, please go to the nearest local government unit hospital in your area,” the statement reads.
It noted that leptospirosis can cause fever, body aches, vomiting, yellowing of the skin, and other serious complications if not treated promptly.
Department of Health reports indicated a 1 percent increase in leptospirosis cases from the 2,461 recorded in the same period last year.
“While Typhoon Inday is within the Philippine Area of Responsibility, heavy rains and possible flooding are expected in some areas. This poses the risk of leptospirosis, particularly for those wading through floodwaters, mud, or contaminated water,” the DOH said.
The agency urged the public to refrain from wading through floodwaters. If it cannot be avoided, the DOH urged the public to wear boots and cover wounds with waterproof bandages.
