Free public transport for persons with disabilities on the cards: Nancy

KUALA LUMPUR – Plans are afoot to make public transportation free for persons with disabilities (PwDs), Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said.

She tweeted that she and Transport Minister Anthony Loke had discussed the matter this morning before the weekly cabinet meeting, and the latter had been agreeable on the matter.

“Before the cabinet meeting, I had a chance to talk with Anthony Loke about giving free fares to disabled people who use public transport such as the Light Rail Transit, Mass Rapid Transit, and stage buses.

“He agreed in principle and will think of the best mechanism to implement it,” Nancy said in her tweet.

According to Prasarana Malaysia Bhd in previous news reports, the average number of PwDs using bus and rail services monthly was 23,527 and 26,762, respectively.

For the 65th Merdeka celebration last year, Prasarana had provided free rides to PwDs for one month. Those who are registered with the Social Welfare Department and produced a disability card were eligible for free travel for 31 days. – The Vibes, January 18, 2023
