A shocking discovery at a Penang food court has prompted swift action from health authorities after a nurse reportedly found a fried rat among a tray of chicken at a hawker stall near Penang Hospital.

The incident occurred at a food court along Jalan Utama, where the nurse had been purchasing food to take away. Upon noticing the small fried carcass among the pieces of chicken, she immediately alerted the Penang Health Department and the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).

Preliminary findings suggest that the rodent may have accidentally fallen into the frying pan while the hawker was preparing chicken, before being unknowingly served on the tray. The disturbing discovery quickly drew the attention of enforcement teams, who carried out an immediate inspection of the premises.

Authorities found that several food stalls at the same food court were operating in unhygienic conditions. Rat and cockroach droppings were reportedly discovered in multiple areas, raising concerns about food safety standards. Following the inspection, 12 stalls received official notices for various violations, while nine were ordered to shut down for 14 days.

Officials instructed the affected stall owners to conduct a thorough cleaning and sanitization before being allowed to resume business. The Penang Health Department emphasized that strict enforcement would continue to ensure public health is not compromised, particularly in food establishments located near hospitals and other public facilities.

The incident has reignited public concern about cleanliness at hawker centres, which are a popular dining choice among locals and tourists alike. Penang’s local councils have previously carried out periodic inspections to maintain hygiene standards, but the discovery of a fried rat in a food tray has amplified calls for even stricter oversight.

While authorities are investigating how the contamination occurred, food operators across the island have been reminded to adhere to proper food-handling practices and maintain a pest-free environment. The Penang Island City Council also urged the public to report any similar incidents to help curb negligence that could endanger consumers.

As enforcement officers continue their follow-up checks, the nurse’s report has served as a stark reminder that even in well-frequented food courts, lapses in hygiene can have disturbing—and dangerous—consequences.
