Cold-water swimming is no longer a challenge, but a travel trend people around the world are increasingly embracing. From the icy waters of Scotland's lochs to the glacier-fed lakes of Canada and Slovenia, these 5 cold-water destinations are drawing travellers looking for more than just a beach holiday.
Happen to remember the ice bucket challenge that took over Instagram and TikTok a few years ago? Yes, that's exactly what cold water swimming destinations offer, but only rawer, wilder and more intense. For starters, there's no bucket here being dumped on your head. Rather, you're dipping into freezing or next-to-freezing lakes, swimming through icy alpine waters, and stepping into natural pools cold enough to leave your skin tingling long after you get out.
What once felt like something reserved for athletes and wellness enthusiasts has quietly turned into one of travel's biggest outdoor trends. Across Europe and North America, travellers are increasingly swapping busy beach clubs and predictable resort pools for wild lakes, icy rivers, and cold sea dips that feel far more connected to nature. And if you, too, like the thrill of cold-water swimming, these 5 cold-water swimming destinations are ranked the best in the world.
How does the cold-water swimming destination ranking work?
Icewear, an Icelandic apparel brand, developed its Hot and Cold Therapy Index by analysing reviews from over 60 locations. Reportedly, they analysed more than 54,000 Google reviews of these 60+ destinations and measured how often visitors used positive words linked to the experience, such as 'authentic,' 'relaxing,' 'transformative,' and 'invigorating.' For consistency and authenticity, they only analysed reviews written in English. They manually removed phrases like 'not relaxing' or 'not beautiful.' The result? A list of 20 beautiful cold-water swimming destinations in the world. The ranking is more about real reviews than size, fame, or social media attention.
The top 5 cold-water swimming destinations
From North America to Europe, the destinations on this list are wildly different from each other. However, they all have one thing in common: water cold enough to leave you fully awake within seconds. According to Icewear's ranking, these are 5 best cold-water swimming destinations in the world.
Lake Bled, Slovenia

Lake Bled in Slovenia tops the ranking with 76.8% positive reviews, and it's easy to see why. A postcard-worthy spot, it has a glacial basin, clear water, and the tiny island church at its centre, giving it a storybook quality. You can swim at multiple bathing sites around the lake, and the water is especially suitable for bathing in summer, when temperatures usually sit between 20 °C and 24 °C. It gives a scenic swim with one of the more approachable cold-water swimming options on the list.
Moraine Lake, Canada

Sharing the second spot with 72% positive review score, Moraine Lake and Cairngorms National Park offer two completely different cold-water experiences.
Moraine Lake is tucked inside Canada's Banff National Park. From unreal turquoise water and glacier-fed temperatures to towering mountain backdrop in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, it's the showstopper of the list. Water remains freezing cold even in summer. It is one of the most visited destinations in Canada with tightly managed access.
Cairngorm National Park, Scotland

Cairngorms National Park in Scotland is quieter and more rugged. With sandy shores, wild lochs, and open Highland scenery, it offers the perfect kind of slower, more grounded outdoor escapes. Loch Morlich and Loch Insh are crowd favourite cold-water swimming spots. Loch Insh, in particular, is a year-round spot with tons of cafes around.
Banff National Park, Canada

Banff reappears in the ranking because it offers more than one type of cold-water escape. With 71.2% positive reviews, it has multiple options for cold-water swimming. For instance, Johnson Lake and Cascade Ponds are a bit warmer and more accessible. Johnson Lake is one of the few lakes in Canada that is not glacier-fed. This makes it one of the warmest lakes in the Canadian Rockies and a good spot for casual paddling and swimming. As such, Banff offers something for everyone, from those seeking iconic alpine drama to those looking for a gentler, more relaxed swim close by.
Lake Tahoe, United States

With a 67.7% positive review, Lake Tahoe rounds out the top five. The U.S. Forest Service notes that water can freeze, especially in spring, and warns that cold water shock can be life-threatening. The lake is huge. It is 22 miles long, 12 miles wide, and 2/3 in California and 1/3 in Nevada. It has multiple designated swim beaches that open seasonally, typically from Memorial Day through mid-October. Sand Harbor is one of the best spots for a cold-water swim with crystal-clear water. While Pope Beach and Baldwin Beach are the most happening with picnic areas, kayak rentals and food options.
