I thought it was a quick catch up over ayam geprek and orange juice at Eastin Hotel yet there was more to that. Apparently, there was a corporate health talk held. As far as I was concerned, it'll be a pretty interesting ayam geprek session.

Cancer: Malaysia’s Silent Killer

We hear it all the time—cancer is common, cancer is scary. But the reality is, cancer is often invisible until it’s too late. According to recent stats shared at the talk, cancer is now the fourth leading cause of death in Malaysia, and projections from Cancer Research Malaysia suggest that cases could double by 2040.

That means more families affected. More financial strain. More lives cut short—not because there wasn’t treatment, but because there wasn’t early intervention.

It hit me. I thought of friends who discovered their diagnosis late and uncles who brushed off warning signs as “biasa lah, aging.”

Manulife’s Approach: Beyond Emergencies

What impressed me about Manulife wasn’t just the data—it was their shift in mindset. Health insurance wasn’t being pitched as a “break glass in case of emergency” safety net. It was presented as a partnership for prevention.

Their Manulife Health Saver Enrich (MHSE), for instance, doesn’t just cover hospitalisation. It includes vaccinations, mental wellness, and even post-cancer recovery care for up to 5 years. And for families, there’s up to RM20 million in annual coverage with flexible options for spouses and children—plus discounts for staying healthy.

I thought to myself, maybe I should review my existing policy as it has been five years and might need some upgrades considering inflation and not wanting to experience the long waiting time at general hospitals.

Then there’s Beyond Critical Cover (BCC), which takes things a step further with protection against 48 critical illnesses, including cancer. What stood out to me most was the BCC Booster—a 5% automatic increase in coverage every year, helping people keep up with rising medical costs without doing anything extra.

It all sounded human. Less insurance lingo, more of “we’ve got you". Still, my advise is to seek thorough explanation in considering with your own protection needs, before committing to any policy.

But Here’s What I Still Hope For

As much as I admire Manulife’s proactive approach, I couldn’t help but wonder:

What about those already showing early symptoms?

So many Malaysians are already in the limbo zone—undiagnosed, but not entirely well. Maybe they’ve had a few worrying scans. Maybe a doctor has said, “Let’s keep an eye on this”. These are the people who need help the most.

I hope Manulife—along with other insurers—continues to evolve their policies to include early-stage cases and high-risk individuals. Because cancer doesn’t wait for approvals and prevention doesn’t work if people feel they’re already too late.
