Recently, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, (MACC) froze the BERSATU’s account due to allegations of government funds allegedly misappropriated by the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government when implementing various stimulus packages following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, chairman of PN, has expressed a willingness to work with authorities to address the allegations against his government. His efforts to maintain checks and balances in the government, including the recent approval of 26 Portfolio Committees, should be praised. By taking steps to ensure transparency and accountability, he is demonstrating a commitment to good governance and setting a positive example for other leaders to follow. Despite the seriousness of the allegations against BERSATU, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin made a valid point when he requested the MACC to unfreeze the party's account, given the need for continued party operations.
However, the freeze had already caused significant hardship for the workers and members of BERSATU. While it's important to address corruption allegations, it's also crucial to balance this with the needs of the people affected by such actions. We must find a way to address corruption allegations without unfairly punishing innocent parties or impeding the essential work of political parties like BERSATU.
The common perception of politicians is that we are all wealthy, but the truth is that many of us struggle to make ends meet while working to improve our communities and the lives of our constituents.
It's also high time that we address the issue of constituency funding for the opposition, which is a crucial aspect of ensuring that we can effectively serve the people who depend on us. As political representatives, our primary responsibility is to provide the best possible service to the people of our constituencies, regardless of political affiliations. Unfortunately, the current system seems to be biased against the opposition, leaving us without the necessary resources to carry out our duties effectively.
This is not just a matter of political favoritism, but a fundamental issue of fairness and justice for all Malaysians. When opposition representatives are not given the support they need to carry out their work, it's the people who suffer. We cannot allow the government to ignore the needs and concerns of a significant portion of the population simply because they hold different political views.
Despite the differences in political beliefs, I recognize DAP Kota Melaka MP Koo Poay Tiong for his bravery in bringing the critical issue of opposition constituency funding to the attention of Dewan Rakyat. His efforts are a testament to the opposition's unwavering commitment to ensuring proper checks and balances in the government, a commitment that was also the reason why the Perikatan Nasional (PN) decided not to join the 'Unity Government' in the first place.
The opposition has always played a vital role in holding the government accountable and representing the needs and concerns of all Malaysians. Yet, time and time again, we have been denied the resources and opportunities needed to carry out our duties effectively. This not only affects the opposition but also undermines the very foundations of democracy and fair representation in Malaysia.
Even though it can be argued that this ideology of giving equal constituency funding to the opposition is very new and has not been heard of since the independence of our country, we must acknowledge that ideologies change.
PN, when governing never truly went for the ideology because as said by many, we were the ‘backdoor’ government. Additionally, the implications of Covid-19 made us vulnerable to such ideologies.
However, now, with the legitimate claim, as said by many, it is the government’s responsibility to insinuate change, as they have promised during the election. This is part of it, and it is for the betterment of society.
We need to acknowledge the contributions of those like Koo Poay Tiong, who are willing to stand up and fight for the rights of all Malaysians. We need to support their efforts to ensure that every voice is heard and every community is represented in the halls of government. It's time for all of us to work together to create a more equitable and just Malaysia, where all Malaysians can thrive and prosper.
