Building a Workplace Where Every Mind Matters: Manulife’s Quiet but Powerful Push for Inclusivity
When we talk about “inclusion”, the conversation often gets stuck at the surface level, like a taboo. But at Manulife Malaysia’s recent media meet, the theme Championing Diversity: Malaysia’s Journey to Inclusive Leadership felt different. It wasn’t a corporate gimmick, it was a peek into how a major financial institution is quietly but consistently reshaping what the Malaysian workplace can look like, especially for talents who experience the world a little differently. A valuable perspective on how inclusive practices strengthen connections between businesses and the communities they serve, and to how inclusive practices are shaping the future of work. The conversation featured Vibha Coburn, CEO of Manulife Malaysia; Soh Yoon Yee, Chief People Officer; Anna Yamauchi, Founder and CEO of Lumirious; and Grace Gan, Manager of Yayasan Gamuda’s Enabling Academy.

For Manulife Malaysia, inclusion is embedded in its purpose and reflected in action, from driving gender balance in leadership and flexible work arrangements to partnerships like Enabling Academy that create pathways for differently abled individuals. Nearly 17% of employees globally fall under the neurodivergent spectrum, and cognitively diverse teams can solve problems three times faster than homogenous or "normal" working groups. This could be a powerful driver of innovation when organizations embrace neuro-inclusion. “At Manulife, inclusion is more than a value, it’s a business imperative and a social responsibility,” said Vibha Coburn, CEO of Manulife Malaysia.

In addition, when asked how does Manulife creates a structure in workplace that supports neurodivergent. Manulife's Chief People Officer, Soh Yoon Yee claimed “It’s all about having different perspectives in evaluating an individual's uniqueness. e provide alternative support that caters to their unique ability in completing a task.” This puts away the cookie cutter KPIs to become obsolete in evaluating an individual's performance and productivity.

Manulife's commitment shapes not only their work culture but also solutions for Malaysians, whether it’s health plans that prioritize women’s wellness or products like Manulife Health Saver Enrich that help individuals and families safeguard their health and financial future.
In the period where businesses is rapidly evolving, constantly chasing agility, creativity, and resilience, organizations that celebrate different minds will always stay ahead. And Manulife seems ready to champion this future, not with loud slogans, but with practical systems, thoughtful leadership, and a simple belief:
When people feel seen, heard, and respected, they perform not just better, but differently. Sometimes, “different” is exactly what innovation needs.
