Money changing is no longer just about walking up to a counter, handing over cash and waiting for a stack of foreign banknotes.

For Malaysian money services provider Moneywave, the future could involve checking an exchange rate on a smartphone, securing the rate digitally and collecting the currency at a physical outlet later.

That is the direction the company is taking with the opening of its new flagship headquarters at Wisma MCA, Jalan Ampang, marking a new chapter after more than three decades in the business.

From its beginnings as a neighbourhood currency exchange counter in Pandan Indah, Ampang, Moneywave is now looking to bring traditional money services and digital convenience under one roof.

The company calls its approach “phygital”, a combination of physical and digital services designed to give customers more flexibility when exchanging currencies or transferring money.

From the counter to the phone

At the new flagship, customers can access currency exchange, remittance services and business solutions in one location.

Moneywave is also developing a digital platform that will allow customers to begin their transactions online before completing them at a physical outlet.

One of the planned features is the ability to lock in a foreign exchange rate through a mobile phone and collect the currency later at the counter.

The company refers to this concept as “first mile digital, last mile physical”.

“We spent thirty years learning what people need when they move money. Wisma MCA is where we build the outlet around that, instead of asking customers to fit the counter,” said Aiman Kallahan, CEO of Moneywave.

Rather than replacing physical outlets with digital services, Moneywave believes both channels can work together.

The model is aimed at customers who may not be fully comfortable with app-only financial services, including those who prefer face-to-face assistance, transact in cash or want to speak to someone before committing to an exchange rate.

Serving more than travellers

Moneywave currently operates five outlets across West and East Malaysia, providing currency exchange and remittance services covering more than 60 currencies.

Beyond individual customers, the company is also planning business solutions, including local payout services and international payments to vendors and recipients.

Its customer base includes foreign workers sending money home, families supporting relatives overseas, students, travellers and small businesses paying suppliers or foreign employees.

As financial services become increasingly digital, Moneywave sees an opportunity to serve customers whose needs do not fit neatly into either a purely physical or purely digital experience.

“Money is becoming increasingly digital, but the need for accessibility and human interaction hasn’t disappeared. Our view is that customers should not have to choose between the two,” said Aiman.

The new flagship is expected to serve as a blueprint for future Moneywave outlets, combining traditional service environments with digital capabilities.

Three decades of money, told through banknotes

While the new headquarters looks towards the future, Moneywave is also celebrating its history.

The flagship features a display of rare international banknotes from one of the company’s founders’ personal collections.

The collection, built over more than 30 years, began with an interest linked to his work behind the counter and eventually became a lifelong hobby.

The banknotes offer a glimpse into the changing nature of money, from physical currencies collected across decades to the digital platforms increasingly used to move funds today.

The grand opening featured a traditional lion dance and firecrackers, followed by the official ribbon-cutting ceremony and a walkthrough of the flagship.

For Moneywave, the next chapter is not about choosing between the counter and the smartphone.

It is about making both work together.
