SARA recipients rush to buy frozen food, leaving sausages, nuggets, meatballs sold out nationwide
JUST two days after the government announced that frozen food items are now eligible under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) programme, supermarkets and selected grocery stores reported empty shelves as sausages, nuggets, and meatballs sold out quickly.
A TikTok user, DonNa, shared a video showing completely cleared frozen food sections, as Sara recipients used their RM100 credit—loaded onto MyKad for those aged 18 and above—to stock up.

Commenters highlighted how this move benefits low-income households.
Nur Aisyah noted that frozen food is easier to store and lasts longer compared to fresh chicken or fish. “Since sausages and nuggets can now be bought with Sara, I immediately grabbed them. My kids love it, and it’s convenient to cook,” she said.
@honeybreath added: “I am also craving for nugget, Alhamdulilah, I am able to buy it and my children will be able to have it. God willing, the outlets will restock the items eventually.”
Another shopper, @matchalahh, remarked that many Econsave outlets were crowded, with many freezers left empty.
Meanwhile, @NinjaTuna shared that Sara allowed them to purchase items like Greek yogurt, which they usually hesitate to buy due to cost.
Many recipients said their purchases were also in preparation for Chinese New Year and Ramadan.
Asyikin explained, “Chinese families are stocking up for the New Year, while Malay households are preparing for Ramadan. Nuggets and sausages make quick sahur meals—easy for mothers, enjoyable for children.”
