POST-MORTEM examinations have confirmed that all nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel who died in a tragic accident in Teluk Intan on Tuesday succumbed to multiple severe injuries caused by the road collision.
Perak Police Chief, Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin, stated that the autopsies conducted at Teluk Intan Hospital revealed the victims’ injuries were directly caused by the impact of the crash.
“Pihak hospital yang menjalankan bedah siasat mendapati punca kematian adalah disebabkan multiple injuries due to road traffic collision,” he told Sinar Harian.
The accident occurred at 8:51am on the Chikus–Sungai Lampam road, when a lorry carrying gravel veered into the opposite lane and collided with a truck transporting 18 FRU Unit 5 personnel from their base in Sungai Senam, Ipoh.
The collision claimed nine lives and left the remaining nine officers injured, several of them seriously. At the time, the FRU vehicles were returning to Ipoh in a convoy of seven trucks after completing duties for the Chitra Pournami celebration in Teluk Intan.
Datuk Noor Hisam said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, with comprehensive efforts involving multiple agencies to determine the exact cause of the incident.
“These include cooperation with Puspakom, the Road Transport Department (JPJ), and the Air Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) to assist in the investigation, particularly from a technical standpoint,” he said.
He added that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) would also be setting up a Special Investigation Committee, or Court of Enquiry (CE), in accordance with PDRM’s standard operating procedures when an accident involves loss of life or government assets.
“The committee’s establishment is in line with the standard operating procedures of PDRM in the event of fatalities or damage to government property,” he noted.
Police will also be taking statements from all individuals present at the scene, including the surviving FRU personnel.
“Testimonies from those who survived the crash are essential to complete the investigation,” Noor Hisam said.
Yesterday, Hilir Perak district police chief, ACP Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin, confirmed that the owner of the lorry company whose vehicle collided with a truck carrying Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel on Tuesday will soon be called in to assist with the investigation.
“We will conduct a thorough investigation. We will look at this investigation from all angles, namely human negligence, technical issues involving vehicles, and environmental issues,” he said.
Dr Bakri added that several key agencies have already begun examining the case from multiple perspectives, including the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), the Road Transport Department (JPJ), and Puspakom (Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre).
