1.64 million gig workers are now protected under the Gig Workers Bill (GIP 2025), which came into force on March 31.

KUALA LUMPUR: Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan today announced a series of new worker-focused measures at the Labour Day Celebration, including 24-hour social security protection for 9.6 million workers starting in June.

He said the move by the Social Security Organisation (Socso) would extend coverage beyond workplace incidents to include accidents occurring outside working hours.

Ramanan also confirmed that 1.64 million gig workers are now protected under the Gig Workers Bill (GIP 2025), which came into force on March 31.

In addition, the age limit for the Housewives’ Social Security Scheme will be raised from 55 to 60, benefiting more than 720,000 women.

Other announcements include plans to introduce a mobile labour court, expand the Madani Employee Card to gig workers, and reform 26 labour laws.

Under the upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan, the government is also targeting a minimum monthly wage of RM3,000 by 2030 and aims to position Malaysia as an AI-driven economy, including the establishment of a Semiconductor Academy.

Ramanan said the initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to strengthening worker protection and ensuring fairer economic growth.
