Kota Kinabalu: The toxic fumes emanating from a barrel of decomposing fish meant for a processing plant in Sepanggar was so great that it knocked a worker unconscious on Saturday.

The 23-year-old was among five others aged 19 to 38 years who received medical attention following the 8pm incident.

According to a Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) Operations Centre report, a hazmat team was dispatched to the factory’s jetty upon receiving the 8.26pm distress call.

“The hazmat team in full personal protective equipment conducted toxicity tests but did not find traces of harmful chemicals.

“The victim was sent to hospital in an ambulance, and the four others on FRD Emergency Medical Rescue Services and Civil Defence Department vehicles,” an agency spokesperson said.

Operations involving 15 personnel from the Kota Kinabalu FRD Station ended 10.08pm.
