Kota Kinabalu: Sabah-based action group Gerakan Kuasa Rakyat Malaysia (G57) has denied social media allegations that it is an illegal association, describing the claims as defamatory and confirming it has lodged a police report while preparing legal action against those responsible.
Its secretary, Noraidi Maya, said G57 is not a registered association but a voluntary action group established in 2018 to provide legal advocacy and pro bono legal services, adding that it has no membership, membership fees, constitution, annual general meetings or organisational structure requiring registration with the Registrar of Societies.
Noraidi said G57 has assisted Malaysians regardless of race, religion or political affiliation since its establishment, including raising the case involving the late Zara Qairina, and confirmed a police report was lodged on Friday requesting investigators to obtain the original report referred to in the social media postings.
He said G57 is identifying the individual believed to have lodged the report and would issue a Letter of Demand, with a civil suit to follow if there is no retraction, public apology and appropriate compensation, while warning that anyone repeating the allegations without factual basis could also face legal action.
Noraidi also denied claims that G57 was organising the upcoming Himpunan Bangkit Sabahan 2.0 rally, saying it was organised by the Himpunan Bangkit Sabahan Secretariat, and added that the gathering would call on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to consider reopening investigations into alleged corruption involving Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal while reaffirming G57's commitment to defending its reputation and pursuing public interest through lawful means.
