G57 seeks clarification on proposed road tax changes

Kota Kinabalu: Gerakan Kuasa Rakyat Malaysia (G57) has urged the Ministry of Transport to clarify a proposed road tax system based on the primary location where a vehicle is used.

Its chairman, Datuk Zulkarnain Mahdar (pic) said the Government should explain whether the proposal would affect Sabahans and Sarawakians who work, study or live in Peninsular Malaysia while continuing to use vehicles legally registered in their home states.

He said efforts to curb the misuse of vehicle registrations to obtain lower road tax rates should not place an additional burden on those residing in the peninsula for employment, education or family reasons.

Zulkarnain said Sabahans and Sarawakians have the same rights as all Malaysians to work, study and live anywhere in the country and should not face higher charges because of their current location.

He also called on the Ministry to hold comprehensive engagement sessions with state governments, community groups and the people of Sabah and Sarawak before any amendments are tabled in Parliament.
