Gabions solution to end flooding in Lumadan

BEAUFORT: A total solution to the flood issue in Lumadan is among the focuses of its Assemblyman, Datuk Ruslan Muharam, for development planning this year.

He said that although the problem has lessened due to his initiative in the Sungai Api-Api river maintenance project, floods still occur in several villages.

“This proposal is in line with point seven, the issue of flood mitigation stated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when delivering his message in conjunction with the new year, recently.

Read more “I have also discussed with engineers from the Beaufort District Irrigation and Drainage Department regarding this project, which is seen as the best way to address the flood issue in Lumadan.

“Therefore, we will bring this project proposal to the federal government for implementation,” he said when met during a visit to the Beaufort District Hospital, recently.

Advertisement (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Ruslan, who is also the Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, said that the cause of the previous floods was due to Sungai Api-Api being filled with thick bushes that blocked the flow of flood water out to the sea.

Following that, he said, the river cleaning project must always be implemented, involving an expenditure of about RM500,000 each time maintenance work is carried out.

“At the same time, the construction of this gabion can have an impact on the tourism sector in this area because Sungai Api-Api has a variety of natural diversity.

“If there are gabions, we can build a road on it, thus opening up the option for tourists to either use vehicles or boats to enjoy the nature of this river,” he said.

During the visit, Ruslan had the opportunity to socialise with 120 prospective hajj and umrah pilgrims from the Beaufort district who were having their health checked at the hospital.
