Kota Kinabalu: Three women were fined a total of RM4,800 by the Magistrate’s Court here for engaging in illegal gambling activities.

Adrena Maidi, 24, and Marylin Sitimon, 19, were each ordered to pay a fine of RM1,800 or one month jail after they pleaded guilty before Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali to having nine pieces of Wahui gambling tickets without a licence.

AdvertisementAdrena and Marylin committed the offence on Sept 6, 2024 at 4.30pm, in front of a restaurant in Donggongon town, Penampang.

Meanwhile, the other woman, Laurah Joeddy, 28, was fined RM1,200 or one month jail after she admitted to engaging in online gambling activity in public.

In the case of Adrena and Marylin, the prosecution informed the court that the police on ‘Ops Dadu’ detained two women for operating an illegal lottery business in the area.

A handphone and RM280 cash were then seized from her.

The women requested for a lenient sentence.

Both Adrena and Marylin were charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953 while Laurah was charged under Section 7(2) of the same Act, each provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or a jail term of up to six months or both on conviction.

Meanwhile, seven people were penalised for committing drug-related offences.

Two of them Isamudin Mursid, 29, and Mohamad Ali, 24, pleaded guilty to having syabu weighing 0.07gm and 0.06gm, respectively, on Nov 31 and Nov 29 in Inanam and Kepayan.

The offence, under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952, provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years jail, or both, on conviction.

The two were each sentenced to nine months jail from the date of their arrest.

The other five were Jamaludin Abdul, Chung Thein Fai, Rizuan Ibrahim, Naidi Awa and Azma Sarjan, who admitted to taking syabu and amphethamine between Sept 30 and Oct 23, last year.

Jamaludin was fined RM1,800 or five months’ jail while the rest were handed seven months’ jail each.

They were charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the DDA, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail on conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutors Yuvan Bharathan and Muhammad Haikal Hazwan Md Yatin prosecuted.
