Gang of thugs disrupt Muda event in Muar yet again

KUALA LUMPUR – A Muda event in Muar, Johor fell victim to provocation again after a group of unidentified individuals created a commotion outside of a meet-and-greet event held at the Yong Sheng Hall this evening.

This comes just a week after the “Mega Muar” ceramah last Sunday (October 16) saw a gang of youths attempt to disrupt Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s speech.

In a repeat of last week’s incident, videos shared on Twitter by attendees tonight showed around two dozen rowdy men shouting threats at party supporters.

The videos posted show the group demanding that the Muda supporters leave the premises, before a physical altercation broke out.

In a tweet, the incumbent Muar MP lamented the incident, saying the men had reacted with violence by throwing bottles and firecrackers after being asked where they were from.

“I am just having a dinner event. Why must there be provocation again?” Syed Saddiq asked.

He also thanked the police officers there who managed to subdue the situation.

The event this evening was also attended by Muda central executive committee (CEC) member Lim Wei Jiet, who posted a photo on Twitter of damage allegedly inflicted by the group upon his vehicle.

“My car was unfortunately hit by them (the group) until it was dented. Please, if you do not agree (with a political party), fight with your words. Don’t bring thug political culture into Malaysia,” he said.

Those present at the event were quick to point out that this is the second incident of its kind, with another party CEC member Nurainie Haziqah Shafii taking to Twitter to express how she feels “unsafe” when attending campaign events in Muar, while incumbent Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh urged police to investigate the matter.

Last week, Syed Saddiq alleged that the group of youths who caused a scene were sent by Barisan Nasional (BN) linchpin party Umno.

This led to Johor BN general election operations director Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi demanding an apology from Syed Saddiq as the “reckless and baseless accusations” had given BN and Umno a bad image.

Muar Umno Youth chief Helmy Abdul Latif had also rejected any sort of involvement in the ordeal, asserting that he is strongly against any form of provocation in politics. – The Vibes, October 22, 2022
