Gary Glitter charged with four historical sexual offences against girl

Former pop star Gary Glitter has been charged with four sexual offences against a girl dating back to 1978, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.

The glam rock singer, whose real name is Paul Gadd, is charged with one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13 and three counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14, the CPS said.

Bethan David, deputy chief crown prosecutor at CPS London, said: “This follows allegations made by a woman relating to a period of alleged abuse that took place between 1978 and 1981.

“Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring this case to court and that it is in the public interest to do so.

“We have worked closely with the Metropolitan Police as they have carried out their investigation into the allegations.

“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that proceedings are now active, and the defendant has the right to a fair trial.

“It is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”

The 82-year-old, of HMP Channings Wood, will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in central London on 5 August.

The Metropolitan Police said the allegations were first reported to the force on 9 January last year, and Glitter was interviewed on 22 July 2025, in relation to the investigation.

“The victim is currently being supported by specialist officers and they have been made aware of this update,” the force said.

Glitter was jailed for 16 years in 2015 for sexually abusing three schoolgirls between 1975 and 1980. His sentence expires in 2031.

He was automatically released from HMP The Verne, a low-security prison in Portland, Dorset, in February 2023 after serving half of his fixed-term determinate sentence. But, less than six weeks after walking free, he was put back behind bars when police monitoring showed he had breached his licence conditions.

The offences for which he was jailed in 2015 came to light as part of Operation Yewtree, the Metropolitan Police investigation launched in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal.

He became the first person to be arrested as part of the operation when he was held at his home in the capital in October 2012.
