Gas leak at ECRL project site forces road closure in Kerteh

A BUTANE gas leak at the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) Section 5 project site in Kerteh has prompted police to close the main Kerteh-Ranggon road to all vehicles as a safety precaution.

Kemaman District Police Chief, Superintendent Mohd Razi Rosli, said the police received an emergency call at 9.53am reporting the leak, which involved a highly flammable gas pipeline operated by Petronas Gas Berhad (PGB).

“The leak is located approximately two kilometres from the main road and does not affect any nearby villages or residential areas,” he said in a statement.

He added that police immediately sealed off the area from public and worker access. “Gas supply through the affected pipeline has been halted and shut down temporarily to allow maintenance by the contractor,” he said.

In addition to the road closure, the Incident Control Centre (PKTK) has been activated to coordinate response efforts.

Mohd Razi assured that the authorities are closely monitoring the situation. “The public is advised to avoid the area to prevent any untoward incidents,” he added.

Further updates will be issued as the situation develops. For enquiries or to report information, the public may contact the Kemaman District Police Operations Room at 09-8592222. - September 20, 2025
