TG PIAI – New faces or not, Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Seri Wee Jeck Seng is hardly taking his challengers lightly in the race for the parliamentary constituency here.

Speaking to the press after his walkabout in Kg Kukup Air Masin and the neighbouring Kg Kukup Laut here yesterday, the three-term Tg Piai incumbent MP Wee said he still has to work hard to convince voters to back BN despite his fledgling opponents.

“I see everyone as a (potential) challenger. No matter who the candidates are, we must compete healthily.

“I still (need) to work hard and convince the people to vote for BN.”

Wee, a Tg Piai native, is competing against Muda’s Lim Wei Jiet and Perikatan Nasional’s Najwah Halimah Ab Alim (Bersatu).

The one-time rep in Pekan Nanas, a state constituency under the Tg Piai parliamentary seat, also welcomed Muda’s participation.

“Every party has a beginning. This is not an issue. They come here to compete, so let us compete in a healthy manner.

“For me, I just need to continue working hard (to defend the seat).”

During his walkabout, Wee was warmly embraced by the locals, who wished him good luck in this coming election.

Most of the residents came out to welcome him outside their houses and shared some light-hearted conversation with the BN candidate.

It was clear that Wee has a deep connection with the locals.

One of the business owners in the area, Ang Ar Soon, 55, said he would continue to support Wee, as the latter has a proven track record in serving the locals.

“I can tell you this, bring whoever you want to contest here, but my vote will remain with Wee and BN.

“For every problem that we have here in our village, either he or his aides will help solve them.”

In the 2018 general election, Pakatan Harapan won the seat through its then-component party Bersatu, albeit with a slim majority of 524 votes.

However, the seat fell vacant in 2019 after the death of its MP Datuk Md Farid Md Rafik.

BN, through Wee, reclaimed the seat in the subsequent by-election with a 15,086-vote majority. Wee also held the seat for two terms from 2008 to 2018. – The Vibes, November 11, 2022
