GE15: DAP claims cash being offered to entice Sibu voters

MIRI – Sarawak DAP GE15 director Oscar Ling alleged that certain parties were giving out money to voters in the Sibu parliamentary constituency, where he is defending his seat.

He claimed that amounts of between RM300 and RM500 are being distributed by certain individuals as part of their “cash for votes” approach.

“There are talks of a party giving out cash and if you are a postal voter, you can collect the money from certain people.

“Is this a clean and fair election?” he asked during his ceramah in Sibu town last night.

Ling is facing a very strong challenge from local Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) president and opposition candidate Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, and also from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate Clarence Ting who is from Sarawak United People’s Party.

Ling called on voters in Sibu and the rest of Sarawak not to be easily enticed by money.

He also called on them to cast their ballots for DAP to ensure a clean, fair, and just government.

Sarawakians need such a voice in Parliament to protect their interests and fight for them at the national level, he said.

Meanwhile, pictures and videos are being circulated on alleged cash distribution in longhouses, as well as merry-making and alcohol consumption in these native enclaves.

Sibu district has two parliamentary constituencies – Sibu and Lanang.

Lanang DAP candidate Alice Lau had last week lodged a report at the Election Commission Office in Sibu against a certain political rival for smearing her image in public.

Lau said she had found that her posters erected in the constituency were being tampered with.

“Certain people have erected posters and banners next to my posters saying that I am a liar.

“They erected their posters and banners with the word liar just right next to the name and photo.

“This low-class campaigning tactic must be stopped. My complaint to the EC has been accepted and the officer said steps will be taken to remove the posters smearing my image,” she told reporters in her office.

She is being challenged by Parti Bumi Kenyalang secretary-general Priscilla Lau, GPS candidate Wong Ching Yong, and independent Datuk Wong Tiong Kiong.

Alice is the two-term incumbent MP for Lanang.
