GE15: drop Jamal from polls given pending bankruptcy, Kok urges EC

KUALA LUMPUR – Seputeh incumbent MP Teresa Kok has objected to Umno’s Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos contesting the Sg Besar parliamentary seat, a day ahead of nomination day for the 15th general election (GE15).

Kok has submitted her objections in writing to Election Commission (EC) chief Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh yesterday, citing her bankruptcy notice issued to Jamal after he allegedly failed to pay more than RM350,000 to her as directed by the high court for defamation.

In a statement today, she claimed that Jamal has yet to pay the damages awarded by the high court here on July 26.

“As of today, Jamal has yet to adhere to the court ruling and my bankruptcy proceedings against him are ongoing. So, there is a possibility that he will be bankrupt at the end of the proceedings.

“Following this, I’m urging the EC to reject his nomination as a GE15 candidate,” she said.

On July 26, judicial commissioner Datuk Mohd Arief Emran Arifin awarded RM300,000 in damages to Kok, after she won the defamation action over the alleged misuse of Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor funds.

Jamal, who is Umno’s Sg Besar division leader, was also ordered to pay RM50,000 in costs.

Kok had filed her defamation suit against Jamal on April 6, 2017 as he had accused her of misappropriating RM2 million in funds from Yawas under the Selangor government.

In her statement of claim, she said the statement published by both the print and electronic media, as well as on Jamal’s Facebook page gave the impression that she had misused state government funds for herself and was an unethical person. – The Vibes, November 4, 2022
