PUTRAJAYA – No candidates have won uncontested in the coming general election (GE15) while six nomination papers were rejected, according to the Election Commission (EC).
EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh, in a press conference on the nomination process throughout the country today, said a press release on the matter would be issued later today.
He said the Batu parliamentary seat in Kuala Lumpur has the most number of candidates at 10.
“For contests in state (seats), Chenderiang in Perak takes the record with a seven-cornered fight,” he said.
Ghani said the by-election for the Bugaya state seat in Sabah will also witness a seven-cornered contest.
The nomination process for GE15 and the Bugaya by-election was held at 222 nomination centres throughout the country from 9am to 10am.
Ghani said the campaign period has started following the announcement of candidates by returning officers and it will end at 11.59pm on November 18, the day before polling day.
Asked whether the EC has set any standard operating procedure for the polls, he said all related matters would be explained in the press statement.
GE15 involves 222 parliamentary seats and 116 state seats, namely 59 in Perak, Pahang (42), and Perlis (15).
Polling has been set for November 19 and early voting on November 15.
According to the electoral rolls updated as at October 9, which will be used in GE15, there are 21,173,638 voters, comprising 20,905,366 ordinary voters, 146,737 military personnel and their spouses, 118,794 police personnel and their spouses, and 2,741 absentee voters abroad. – Bernama, November 5, 2022
