GE15: MoHE denies involvement with Malay academics backing Anwar as PM candidate

KUALA LUMPUR – The Higher Education Ministry (MoHE) has denied involvement with a declaration by a group of 70 Malay professors, dubbed G70, on the 15th general election.

In a media conference today, G70 had endorsed Pakatan Harapan chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister candidate and urged voters to support the coalition in the coming polls.

Through a statement, the ministry said the group was not an official representation of academic staff or professors from institutions of higher learning in the country.

It also said that MoHE had no direct or indirect connection with the positions expressed by the group in the declaration.

“MoHE respects the rights and freedom of expression of every individual and academician. However, for those who are still serving as civil servants, their actions are subject to compliance with the existing rules and provisions of the law,” read the statement.

The ministry asked the public to refer to announcements through its official channels, adding that they should not easily believe any declaration or statement made by groups claiming they are representing the country’s higher education personnel. – Bernama, November 16, 2022
