IPOH – Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) elected lawmakers appointed as cabinet members after the 15th general election (GE15) will declare their assets once they are successful in forming the federal government, said the coalition’s election director Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.
He assured that PN will uphold the established practice set during Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s tenure as prime minister for all ministers to declare their assets to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Muhyiddin is the chairman of PN and Bersatu.
However, Azmin stressed that PN should not cave in and follow the purported “theatrics” of their political opponents in PKR, whose candidates for the election on November 19 have declared their assets.
“Usually, when a government is formed, ministers will declare their assets to MACC, which we have done before and will continue to do so,” said Azmin, who is defending his Gombak parliamentary seat in GE15.
“We don’t have to follow others. Even those who have declared their assets, yet are involved in corruption, are still allowed to file their nomination papers and be candidates in the election,” he claimed.
“This is all theatrics. If you are committed to fighting corruption in the system then you should set a good example.
“Your candidates should not be allowed to submit their nomination papers on nomination day if they are still facing cases in court,” he added to reporters after a rally in Klebang Jaya here.
Prior to the campaign period, PKR candidates for the election, including party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and deputy president Rafizi Ramli, had declared their assets.
Similarly, Barisan Nasional’s candidate for Sg Buloh, Khairy Jamaluddin, had also stated that asset declarations are usually done after a cabinet appointment. – The Vibes, November 10, 2022
