KUALA LUMPUR – The VoteMalaysia initiative has brought home 35,092 postal votes in time for the 15th general election (GE15).
In a statement, VoteMalaysia said the postal votes, under category 1B for citizens residing abroad, have been distributed to all polling centres around the country.
It said 216 of the country’s total 222 polling centres had received postal votes from abroad.
VoteMalaysia said among other efforts, it has successfully raised the number of registered category 1B voters from 7,979 in the previous election to 48,109 for GE15, which is a 600% increase.
In the announcement, VoteMalaysia thanked the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall for providing its venue to help distribute the votes, and expressed gratitude to least 200 volunteers and various organisations involved.
“We are also thankful towards Global Bersih and the Global Malaysian Network for their efforts in convincing Malaysians abroad to register as postal voters and in bringing the postal votes from around the world,” it said.
VoteMalaysia also said it had brought home postal votes from 25 countries, including the United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan, Australia, Qatar, South Korea, and India.
It said 73% of the registered postal votes were brought into the country out of the 48,109 registered category 1B voters.
“We also wish to stress the success of the VoteMalaysia initiative is a sign of failure for the Election Commission,” it said.
“A more effective system must be implemented as soon as possible so that postal voters abroad do not need to depend on a civil society group or to fly home themselves due to a flawed and problematic delivery and management system.” – The Vibes, November 19, 2022
