Visiting Islamic Madrasah (School) Al Manarah at Isabela City de Basilan in Southern Philippines, incorporating personalised values-based learning with modern knowledge is another way educators can reach their Gen Z students. According to the owner, Dayang Nirhama Jaljalis, “We use adaptive knowledge, self-directed learning opportunities, and values-based learning activities to allow our students to explore topics that are of personal, religious, nature, environment and community interests.” (D-Mirhama@yahoo.com)
Dayang said, “Working parents are navigating a unique landscape as they raise Gen Z, the cohort of children born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s. This generation has been shaped in an era characterised by rapid technological advancements, shifting cultural norms, and evolving educational paradigms. As such, the strategies for our Madrasah must adapt to balance traditional educational methods with values and Islamic religion, leveraging technology, and fostering a collaborative green environment with community.”
Dayang shared fascinating cases, from the classroom to the educator room, of individuals defying expectations, challenging assumptions, and achieving amazing success. Dayang throws out the old rules and provides new teaching models for students to achieve their highest potential. I discovered how to have a healthy disregard for the impossible, how to recover from failure, and how most problems we encounter are remarkable opportunities in disguise. It is a much-needed school for Gen Z looking to make their mark on the world.
Education is the key and likely the only means through which that essential change of consciousness can occur. I mentioned to Dayang that education through “My Green School” is literally the glue that holds the whole notion of Gross National Happiness (GNH) together, and it is the most essential path to the realisation of that vision in the Green Bhutan. Evidently, every pillar and domain of GNH depends on good education. The foremost priority must always remain the well-being of Gen Z, generations to come and the community.
