It will be Gentari that brings BYD’s flash charging to Malaysia.

PETRONAS clean energy subsidiary Gentari Sdn Bhd has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BYD Malaysia to explore the development and rollout of ultra-high-power electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the nation.

Formalised in Shenzhen, Guangdong, the collaboration focuses on deploying BYD Flash Charging technology alongside integrated Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Designed to radically compress turnaround times at charging bays, BYD Flash Charging can deliver roughly 400 kilometres of driving range in as little as five minutes for compatible electrified vehicles under optimal operating conditions.

The initiative comes during a historic surge in domestic electric mobility, with Malaysia recording 53,537 new EV registrations across the first nine months of 2026—marking an explosive 98.8 percent jump over the same period last year.

With national targets calling for 30,000 public EV charging points nationwide by 2030, this high-power collaboration aims to tackle charging congestion and build range confidence along key travel corridors.

Strategic Rollout: Highway Corridors and Grid-Balancing Battery Storage

Rather than focusing solely on urban destination chargers, the partnership will prioritize high-throughput intercity expressways and arterial routes connecting major population centres.

A major technical pillar of the agreement is the integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Ultra-fast charging places massive sudden demands on local electrical grids, especially in remote highway rest stops. By buffering high-power chargers with localized industrial battery storage, the charging hubs can deliver sustained peak charging speeds to multiple vehicles simultaneously without causing voltage drops or destabilizing local utility infrastructure.

Beyond physical charging stations, Gentari and BYD will also evaluate opportunities in commercial project development, potential operating models, and large-scale renewable energy generation.

Executive Leadership on the Future of Malaysian Charging

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Gentari Group Chief Executive Officer Sushil Purohit noted that as Malaysia’s EV market enters its next phase of maturity, customer adoption will hinge heavily on charger dependability, strategic placement, and high-speed turnaround. Combining BYD’s battery hardware expertise with Gentari’s expansive operational footprint establishes a strong foundation to support mass electrification across the country.

Liu Xueliang, Vice President of BYD and General Manager of BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division, highlighted that bringing Flash Charging out of China into Malaysia addresses one of the primary reservations prospective EV buyers hold: waiting time at the plug.

Echoing the sentiment, BYD Malaysia Managing Director Jacob Ma underscored that creating a frictionless ownership experience is essential to giving local motorists the confidence to transition away from combustion vehicles permanently.

Strengthening the Regional Green Mobility Ecosystem

The MoU signing was executed by Sushil Purohit and Jacob Ma, witnessed by top leadership from both corporate groups. Among those present were PETRONAS Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy Marina Md Taib, PETRONAS Senior Vice President of Projects, Engineering & Technology Dato’ Ir Ts Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof, Gentari Chief Green Mobility Officer Fadzrul Ahmad, Gentari Head of Green Mobility Malaysia Haikal Zubir, Gentari Board Member Girish Nadkarni, alongside BYD Group Chairman Wang Chuanfu and Liu Xueliang.

Gentari currently manages one of the largest clean mobility networks in Southeast Asia, operating over 600 EV charging points in Malaysia while providing cross-border roaming access to roughly 18,000 charging points across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and India through its Gentari Go digital hub.

Pairing Gentari’s extensive energy network with BYD’s next-generation charging hardware promises to make highway pitstops as swift as standard petrol refuels for the next wave of Malaysian EV drivers.
