KUALA LUMPUR – Genting Malaysia Bhd has confirmed that a road charge will soon be implemented for vehicles entering Jalan Genting Highlands, with further details to be announced in due course.

In a statement released today, the company explained that the charge is necessary to cover the rising costs of maintaining the 24-km private road, which includes its steep slopes. Since the road's construction in the 1960s, these maintenance expenses have been borne entirely by the company, Bernama reported.

Built by Genting Malaysia on challenging mountainous terrain, Jalan Genting Highlands serves as the main access route to Resorts World Genting and various other mountain attractions, both within and beyond the company’s properties.

“The heavy traffic on Jalan Genting Highlands has resulted in significant wear and tear, necessitating constant maintenance to ensure the road remains safe for all users,” the company stated.

As part of its "user pays" policy, Genting Malaysia added that the introduction of the road charge is the most sustainable solution to offset the costs of maintenance, repairs, and addressing any unforeseen incidents.

This move aims to ensure the road's safety and continued access for the entire Genting Highlands community, including businesses, millions of tourists, and the public from across the country, it added.

The company also emphasised that this initiative pertains to a private road on private land, with Genting Malaysia taking full responsibility for its upkeep.

“We take the safety of both the roads and slopes very seriously,” the company said. “Maintaining a road in mountainous terrain is challenging, hazardous, and costly, but it is crucial for the continuous improvement of the road and the safety of all users.”

Additionally, Genting Malaysia has teams stationed at mid-hill and hilltop locations on standby 24/7, equipped with trained emergency response personnel to handle any incidents or accidents.

The company highlighted that the road has played a pivotal role in boosting the tourism industry, creating business opportunities and jobs, and contributing to the local economy, as well as the broader economy of Pahang and Malaysia.

According to Genting Malaysia, the presence of Jalan Genting Highlands has also facilitated the growth of other mountain destinations outside the company's properties, further enriching the nation’s tourism sector. - November 13, 2025
