The recent push to create a new secretariat in the name of uniting Malays has sparked skepticism among some political leaders, who argue that genuine unity cannot be achieved through new political platforms alone. Instead, they believe it must stem from honest leadership, fair governance, and a commitment to the people’s real concerns.

Kedah UMNO Communications Director, Syed Mohd Johan Rizal Syed Unan Mashri, pointed out that the key to strengthening Malay unity lies in reinforcing existing institutions rather than forming yet another faction that could potentially fracture political cohesion even further. In his view, efforts born out of frustration or a desire to reclaim lost influence are unlikely to produce lasting unity.

He expressed support for any initiative aimed at fostering unity but emphasized that such efforts must be rooted in sincerity rather than political calculation. According to him, the public is increasingly aware of the motivations behind such moves, especially when they emerge close to election seasons. Mere slogans or symbolic gestures, he argued, no longer resonate with a population seeking tangible improvements in daily life.

Referring to past attempts that claimed to represent Malay interests, Syed Mohd Johan highlighted that many had failed to deliver results and instead deepened divisions. When familiar political figures resurface under new banners, the public is justified in questioning the true intent behind these initiatives, he noted.

He also stressed that Malays in Malaysia are not lacking political representation, given that the leadership of the country continues to be predominantly led by Malay-Muslim leaders. In his view, the actual issues at stake are more pressing—such as economic hardship faced by households, youth unemployment, and threats to social stability. These, he said, should be the real focus of any political movement.

Addressing these matters, according to him, requires not loud rhetoric but consistent, ground-level work to improve people’s lives. Malaysians, he observed, are now more discerning, choosing to support leaders based on their actions rather than how passionately they proclaim to defend Malay rights.

His comments came following former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s announcement on June 4 regarding the formation of a new Malay Secretariat, which aims to unite Malays across political lines. While the initiative claims to be inclusive and focused on restoring Malay political strength, it has prompted questions about its necessity and effectiveness.
