Gerakan Youth Chief Wong Chia Zhen has clarified that the party's call for Perikatan Nasional (PN) to issue a declaration addressing the concerns of non-Malay communities is a strategic effort to bolster the coalition's inclusiveness. The move, proposed by Gerakan President Datuk Dominic Lau during the party's 52nd convention last Sunday, aims to position PN as a coalition capable of representing all Malaysians.
At the convention, Lau highlighted the apprehensions of non-Malays and non-Muslims toward PAS, PN's largest component party, which has been vocal about its vision to establish Malaysia as an Islamic country. He suggested that a clear declaration from PN affirming its commitment to protecting the rights of all races and religions could alleviate these concerns and attract broader support in the upcoming 16th general election (GE16).
In response to criticisms, Wong emphasized that the proposal was not an attack on PAS or any other PN party. Instead, it reflects the reality that PN must appeal to all segments of society to remain a relevant and viable alternative to the current federal government.
"The declaration is simply an effort to solidify PN's foundation as a coalition that embraces inclusivity and does not depend solely on a single race or religion," Wong stated. "It is also a calculated strategy to appeal to those dissatisfied with the Madani government yet hesitant about supporting PN."
Wong expressed confidence in PN’s potential to win over non-Malay voters, many of whom he claimed feel marginalised by the federal government. However, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man dismissed the need for such a declaration, suggesting Gerakan focus on strengthening its support base and membership instead.
Lau’s call underscores the tension within PN over its approach to inclusivity. As the coalition looks ahead to GE16, balancing PAS's Islamic aspirations with the need to attract non-Malay voters remains a crucial challenge. Whether PN heeds Gerakan's advice or continues its current trajectory, its ability to navigate these complexities will likely determine its future as a united and competitive political force.
This debate highlights the broader challenge for Malaysian politics: building coalitions that truly reflect the nation’s diversity while addressing the specific concerns of different communities.
