German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expects a "clear victory" of the national in their World Cup opener against debutants Curaçao on Sunday in Houston.

“The Chancellor will, of course, be watching the German team’s World Cup opener – just like millions of football fans across the country, with plenty of passion,” publishing house Funke quoted a government spokeswoman as saying.

Merz will watch the start of the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada on TV. State Minister for Sport Christiane Schenderlein plans to attend Germany's second group match against Ivory Coast on June 20 in Toronto.

Germany's third group match is on June 25 against Ecuador in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
