Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has welcomed Iran’s announcement that it is ending its attacks on Israel.

"Today’s statement by Iran that the attacks have ceased could be a step in the right direction. We will now be closely monitoring how credible this statement is," he said during an appearance with his Australian counterpart Penny Wong in Berlin on Monday.

At the same time, he called on the leadership in Tehran to exert greater influence over the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon to bring an end to its attacks on Israel.

"A willingness to negotiate is a prerequisite for any long-term peace," Wadephul said, adding that the German government expressly supports the US’s efforts to find a diplomatic solution.

He appealed to "all parties involved to avoid a resurgence of hostilities".

The Iranian military leadership had previously declared its attacks on Israel to be over.

An Israeli government representative later told the news portal ynet that Israel would cease its attacks at the request of US President Donald Trump.
