German Shepherds, Dobermans among  those on Kedah’s proposed list of banned dog breeds

GERMAN Shepherds and Dobermans are among those on Kedah's proposed list of banned dog breeds, said the state Veterinary Services Department.

According to the department's website, other breeds are Rottweilers, Canary Dogs, Bull Terriers and Bull Mastiffs.

The move follows a recent attack by two Rottweilers in Taman Desa Bidara, Kuala Ketil which left five people injured.

According to Kedah Housing, Local Government and Health Committee chairman Mansor Zakaria, the move was necessary to prevent similar incidents.

He reportedly said that these dog breeds posed a safety risk to neighbours.

Kedah Veterinary Services Department director Dr Shaharul Amar Talib said the review will refer to the department's existing restricted and banned breed lists.

"Some breeds are genetically predisposed to aggression and pose a high risk to public safety, while others are typically trained for military, police or security work.

"Some of these dogs are obedient and loyal, but they are not meant to be household pets," he said.

Banned dog breeds in Malaysia include Pit Bull Terriers, American Bulldogs, Neapolitan Mastiffs, Dogo Argentinos, Japanese Tosas, Fila Brasileiros and Akitas. -April 5, 2025
