German prosecutors on Wednesday ordered the arrest of a suspected accomplice in an Islamist-motivated knife attack on a Spanish tourist at Berlin’s Holocaust memorial last year.
The Syrian national is suspected of aiding and abetting attempted murder and dangerous bodily harm, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.
The 37-year-old is accused of having been in contact with another Syrian man, who has already been convicted over the attack, and of encouraging him to carry out the assault. Prosecutors revealed no further details.
A magistrate judge ordered the man to be placed in pre-trial detention later on Wednesday.
The convicted attacker assaulted the tourist with a knife at the Holocaust memorial on the evening of February 21, 2025, inflicting life-threatening injuries. The victim narrowly survived.
In March this year, Berlin’s higher regional court sentenced the attacker to 13 years in prison. He was convicted of attempted murder and attempted membership in a terrorist organization abroad, among other charges.
