Germany recorded temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius for the first time this year on Saturday, the German Weather Service (DWD) said.

The south-western state of Baden-Württemberg saw the highest temperatures, with 31.5 degrees recorded in Waghäusel-Kirrlach, near Karlsruhe, and in Heidelberg.

In Regensburg, Bavaria, the temperature reached 31.4 degrees. Temperatures of 31 degrees were recorded in Neunkirchen-Wellesweiler in Saarland and Duisburg-Baerl in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Temperatures could rise further in some regions in the coming days. From Sunday to Tuesday, highs of up to 34 degrees are possible in the Upper Rhine region, DWD meteorologist Sebastian Schappert said.

Midsummer-like weather

Sunday is set to bring temperatures of between 20 and 25 degrees to northern Germany, where thicker clouds and isolated showers are expected in places.

Elsewhere, temperatures are forecast to range between 27 and 33 degrees, with the warmest conditions in the south-west and south.

Similar conditions are expected on Monday, a public holiday in Germany, with mostly clear skies and midsummer highs of between 26 and 33 degrees. The highest temperatures are again expected in the south-west.
