A major music festival in Germany was interrupted on Thursday due to fires outside the event grounds, according to a dpa reporter on site.

The fire brigade evacuated the Fusion Festival in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is working to extinguish the flames.

Festival-goers were instructed to move to a runway on the site of the former Soviet military airfield in the town of Lärz. Pictures showed a column of smoke rising into the air near the festival site.

It was unclear how long the operation would take. No injuries had been reported, and the cause of the fires remains unknown, police said.

The Neubrandenburg Police Headquarters stated that the festival had been suspended shortly before 7 pm (1700 GMT).

A festival spokesman told dpa that the interruption was temporary and had been prompted by two separate fires. He expected the event to continue.

A dpa reporter said the atmosphere was calm as visitors left the site, with most heading to the runway. The smell of smoke hung in the air.

The festival began on Wednesday and is scheduled to run until Sunday. The organizers are expecting around 65,000 visitors.

The annual Fusion festival is regarded as one of the largest alternative music and culture festivals in Germany and Europe, combining techno, rock, pop and many other musical styles with theatre and political education.

Fusion is due to take a break in 2027 before coming back in 2028.
