German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said on Tuesday there are signs of a potential turning point in Ukraine’s fight against invading Russian forces.
“I believe that the Ukrainians actually have momentum. Russia is going through a phase of weakness, both economically and domestically, as well as on the battlefield,” he said during a visit to Ukrainian command posts in the eastern regions of Zaporizhzhya and Dnipro.
“The Ukrainians are making huge progress. The strikes against Russian military infrastructure deep behind the front lines are becoming more devastating and are having an impact," he added.
During his visit, Pistorius was briefed on how Ukrainian forces use drones for reconnaissance and to target Russian weapons systems and troops. He also observed ongoing operations.
Ukraine has significantly expanded its capabilities in unmanned systems, particularly over the past year, an experience that the German military is expected to benefit from as part of a strategic partnership.
“Many are now talking about a decisive phase of the war, possibly in Ukraine’s favour,” Pistorius said, adding that earlier, very pessimistic forecasts about the course of the war were no longer widely shared.
