Getting more specialists for Tawau hospital: Ratib

Kota Kinabalu: The Community Development and People’s Wellbeing Ministry hopes to get more specialists to be posted to Tawau Hospital.

Its Minister Datuk James Ratib said there are presently 18 specialists in Tawau Hospital.

“In our 2023-2030 plan, we will add another 38 specialists and this is our target from the federal Health Ministry,” he said. He was responding to a supplementary question by Sri Tanjung Assemblyman Justin Wong.

Earlier, to Wong’s question, James said the Sabah Health Department (JKNS) had informed the Ministry that there are currently 350 parking lots at Tawau Hospital.

“JKNS has yet to make plans to take back land belonging to Qhazanah Sabah or Warisan Harta.”

However, he said, JKNS will contact the State Government about other vacant lands around the hospital area to be used as parking lots.

“In future, Tawau Hospital needs approximately 1,000 to 1,500 parking lots.

“We welcome outside investors to build this parking lot on a BOT or Build-Operate-Transfer basis and rent it to the Health Ministry,” he said.

Meanwhile, to another supplementary question by Sekong Assemblyman Alias Sani, James said he had recently visited the site for Sandakan Hospital’s expansion.

“However, we are still waiting for the allocation from the Federal Government.

“And I am always in contact with the Health Ministry so that this project can be initiated immediately,” he said.
