KUALA LUMPUR - The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to gig workers by recognising them as “modern-day heroes” and ensuring they are protected under the newly-passed Gig Workers Bill.
Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong delivered this message in front of over 1,500 riders during the 3km Penang Rider Jalan Teruih programme in Permatang Pauh today.
The event, which featured a lively motorcycle convoy and participation from multiple biker clubs, doubled as an outreach platform where gig workers received first-hand clarification on their rights to labour protection, social security, and legal safeguards under the new law.
Sim personally fielded questions from the gig community, underscoring that the Bill goes beyond legislation – it is formal recognition of their crucial role in driving Malaysia’s digital and service economy.
The programme also created buzz with a lucky draw offering an electric motorcycle and over 400 prizes, while setting the stage for a nationwide roadshow to ensure gig workers in every state are fully informed and protected.
The programme was organised by Perkeso in collaboration with the Penang State Youth and Sports Department and the Penang Youth Development Centre (PYDC), with participation from motorcycle clubs such as Xtreme Bikers Club, MSBKC, Northern Versy Owner Group, Zontes 368G Northern Rider Club, PMTC, Sahabat Honda Penaga, ATMS and RRC Grab 2W Penang. - Sept 22, 2025
