The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to be unlike any tournament we have seen before.
For the first time in history, the World Cup will be jointly hosted by three nations — the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It will also be the first edition to feature 48 teams instead of 32, giving more countries the opportunity to compete on football’s biggest stage.
As football enters a new era, one notable storyline is Italy’s continued struggle on the international stage. The four-time world champions missed both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, highlighting how much the global football landscape has changed in recent years.

Could we finally see a new World Champion?
Since the inaugural World Cup in 1930, every champion has come from either Europe or South America. The trophy has been dominated by traditional powerhouses such as Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Uruguay.
With 48 teams, more matches, and greater opportunities for emerging nations, could 2026 finally produce a first-time champion?
Could Portugal lift the trophy for the first time?
Could the Netherlands finally go one step further after finishing runners-up three times (1974, 1978, 2010)?
Or will one of football’s established giants once again prove why history matters?
Football has always been a sport where the unexpected can become reality.
From Paul the Octopus to Artificial Intelligence
Many fans still remember Paul the Octopus, who became a global sensation during the 2010 World Cup by correctly predicting several match results, including Spain’s victory in the final.
Today, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a modern tool used to analyse football predictions.
AI can process player statistics, team form, injuries, tactical trends, and historical data to estimate a team’s chances of success. However, football remains one of the most unpredictable sports in the world.
A red card, an injury, a penalty shootout, or a moment of brilliance can instantly change the outcome of a tournament.
While AI is far more advanced than earlier prediction methods, it still cannot predict football’s magic.

My prediction for 2026
If I had to predict the top three teams today, my picks would be:
🥇 France
🥈 Brazil
🥉 Spain
France arguably possesses one of the deepest talent pools in world football and continues to produce world-class players in every position. Brazil remains a perennial contender blessed with extraordinary talent and strong squad depth, while Spain’s exciting new generation appears capable of challenging for the title.
Of course, football is never played on paper.
A dream ending for Cristiano Ronaldo?
While my prediction points towards France, my heart hopes for a different story.
Cristiano Ronaldo has already won almost every major trophy in football. If he is selected for Portugal’s final squad and leads them to their first-ever World Cup title, it would rank among the greatest achievements in football history.
For many fans, including myself, that would be a fitting conclusion to one of the sport’s most remarkable careers.
The Portugal players are carrying the memory of Diogo Jota in their hearts. As they pursue World Cup glory, they will also be playing for a teammate whose passion and spirit inspired millions. Perhaps this is the year Portugal can make history and lift their first-ever FIFA World Cup trophy. ❤️🇵🇹🏆

Who could be the surprise package?
Every World Cup produces at least one team that exceeds expectations.
South Korea reached the semi-finals in 2002.
Croatia reached the final in 2018.
Morocco made history by becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals in 2022.
Looking ahead to 2026, several nations could emerge as dark horses:
• Morocco
• Japan
• United States
• Colombia
Japan, in particular, continues to impress with an increasing number of players competing in Europe’s top leagues. If they reach the quarter-finals or even the semi-finals, it would not be a surprise.

A tournament full of uncertainty
The road to 2026 will be influenced by many factors beyond football itself.
Player workload, injuries, travel demands, squad depth, and other unforeseen circumstances could all impact preparations and performances.
Perhaps that uncertainty is what makes this World Cup so fascinating.
Final thoughts
The 2026 FIFA World Cup represents more than just another tournament.
It marks the beginning of a new chapter in football history.
A bigger competition.
More nations.
More dreams.
More possibilities.
Will a traditional giant such as France, Brazil, Argentina, or Spain lift the trophy once again?
Or will the world witness the rise of a brand-new champion?
My prediction remains:
🏆 Champions: France
🥈 Runners-up: Brazil
🥉 Third place: Spain
Yet football has never followed scripts.
My heart hopes Portugal can make history and give Cristiano Ronaldo the one major trophy that has eluded him throughout his legendary career.
Because in football, the most memorable moments are often the ones nobody sees coming.
