Cape Verde, a small West African nation, with a populations about 529,000, made their World Cup debut by holding reigning European Cup champion to a goalless draw in their opening Group H match in Atlanta, USA. Spain were favorites to win, but their relentless attack was rebutted by Cape Verde goalkeeper, Vozinha. The 40-year-old keeper had a stellar world cup debut. His heroics between the sticks, the heartwarming story behind his nickname & the fact that his mother could not attend the World Cup because of visa issues have stuck a chord with football fans across the globe. Following which Vozinha's Instagram has exploded after his amazing performance performance against Spain, leaving him with millions of followers. (the guardian.com)

I shared with my grandson, Fayyadh that “Cape Verde's 0-0 draw with Spain in their opening match of FIFA World Cup is a massive historical upset. The significance lies in Cape Verde's World Cup debut, their defensive masterclass that set World Cup records, and the tactical vulnerabilities exposed in the Spanish squad. Earning a draw against a tournament favorite instantly etched the match into tournament lore as one of the remarkable debut performance in World Cup history. The Cape Verde defense was staggeringly organized. They committed just one foul only during the entire 90-minute tough match.”

Responding to Fayyadh question, I replied, “The 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha delivered an all-time great defensive performance. He registered seven crucial saves, earning Player of the Match & becoming an overnight global sensation. Spain controlled nearly 75% of possession, registered 27 attempts on goal. Despite the overwhelming statistics favoring Spain, Cape Verde's backline held firm and even had a 91st-minute chance to win it themselves.”

The goalless stalemate marks the second consecutive World Cup where Spain struggled to convert high possession into actual goals. While most of the commentators have drawn parallel to Spain's opening-game loss in 2010 (which they eventually won), the draw immediately shook up their standing.
