Another painful night for England fans. They were just 90 minutes away from the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, but once again, they fell short on football’s biggest stage.
I’m no football coach, but as a football fan, it felt like England lost this game themselves.
England started strongly and deservedly took the lead. Their pressing was effective, their confidence was high, and Argentina looked uncomfortable. For a moment, it seemed like England had finally found the mentality needed to overcome one of the world’s best teams.
But after scoring the opening goal, everything changed.
Instead of continuing to attack and looking for a second goal, England gradually dropped deeper and focused more on defending their advantage. Against a team like Argentina, this is always a risky approach. You cannot give a world-class team too much time and space because eventually, they will find a way back into the game.
And Argentina did exactly that.
They stayed calm, controlled possession, and kept putting pressure on England. Once Argentina scored the equaliser, the momentum shifted completely. England looked nervous, while Argentina grew stronger and more confident. The winning goal eventually arrived, sending Argentina into another World Cup final.
For England, this defeat feels like a huge missed opportunity.
The painful part is that this was not the first time England have struggled in a similar situation. Many fans will remember the UEFA Euro final against Italy, where England also failed to maintain enough attacking threat after taking the lead.
The lesson is clear: football at the highest level cannot be won by simply protecting a narrow lead.
Modern football is about balance. A strong defence is important, but the best teams know how to defend by keeping possession, creating chances, and keeping opponents under pressure.
Sometimes, the best way to defend is to keep attacking.
Credit must go to Argentina. They showed the experience and mentality of champions. Falling behind in a World Cup semi-final could have caused panic, but they remained patient, trusted their quality, and produced another impressive comeback.
For England, the journey ends with disappointment. This generation has talented players and the ability to compete with the best teams in the world. However, winning major tournaments requires more than talent — it requires courage, belief, and the ability to stay positive under pressure.
England will have to look back at this match and ask an important question:
Did they lose because Argentina were better, or because they stopped being themselves after taking the lead?
Football can be cruel. Sometimes, the biggest opponent is not the team standing across the pitch.
Sometimes, it is your own mindset.
