Imagine this headline appearing on your social media one morning:

“Harimau Malaya Qualifies For The FIFA World Cup!”

Before Malaysians even celebrate the goals, tactics, or historical achievement, there is probably one question that will immediately appear in most group chats:

“Got public holiday or not ah?”

Because let's be honest, Malaysians have priorities.

A World Cup qualification is a once-in-a-lifetime football achievement, but an extra day off work might be the first thing many of us start calculating. Office workers would already be checking their calendars, students would be hoping classes get cancelled, and someone somewhere would definitely say:

“Malaysia finally masuk World Cup, the government should reward us with a holiday lah.”

But behind all the jokes, imagine how incredible that moment would be. For generations of Malaysian football fans, seeing Harimau Malaya compete on the biggest football stage in the world has always been a dream, A dream that sometimes feels too far away, especially when compared to countries with stronger football histories and resources.

But what if one day, Malaysia really did the impossible? What if Harimau Malaya shocked the world and booked a place in the FIFA World Cup?

The entire country would probably enter football fever overnight. People who usually say, “I don't really watch football,” would suddenly become experts. They would know the match schedule, analyse player performances, and proudly wear the national jersey everywhere.

Social media would be filled with the Jalur Gemilang. Mamak stalls would be packed with fans staying awake until midnight. Families would gather in front of the television, and friends would support rival football clubs would finally unite for one team, Malaysia.

Of course, the World Cup would not be an easy journey. Malaysia would face teams with world-class players, bigger budgets, and decades of experience, but football has always been unpredictable. That's why millions of people love the sport. It gives underdogs a chance to dream. It reminds us that passion, teamwork, and determination can create moments nobody expects.

A World Cup qualification would not only inspire football fans. It would inspire children playing football at neighbourhood fields, hoping that one day they could wear the Harimau Malaya jersey themselves. Because sometimes, one historic moment can change how an entire country sees its own potential.

Maybe today, Malaysia qualifying for the FIFA World Cup sounds impossible, but if that day comes, Malaysians will remember more than just the score. They will remember the celebrations, the tears, the people they watched it with, and the feeling of seeing Malaysia stand proudly among the world's best football nations.

And haha yes, they will probably still ask: “So…tomorrow public holiday or not?”

Because this is Malaysia. We dream big, we celebrate proudly, and we always know how to find a reason to take a day off.
