As a management educator and HRD practitioner, I learned that the 2026 World Cup will be a global laboratory for leadership, culture, and teamwork, where talent alone is not enough to win. At this tournament, 48 national teams and some of the world's greatest talents come together, yet only one can ultimately lift the trophy. The difference between winning and losing often depends on leadership, confidence, and the ability to transform individuals into a cohesive team. In this context, not all teams possess the same talent, but the leaders and teams that know how to make the most of it prevail success.
Why do some teams succeed while others fail? I have discovered the answer has less to do with individual talent than many of my students, colleagues & children imagine. It has much more to do with leadership, team spirit, and the psychological safety that exists within a group. Every World Cup produces the same narrative. Attention is focused on the biggest names, the highest-valued players, and the most powerful national teams. My studies on collective performance demonstrate that excessive individual talent alone does not guarantee better results than teams with superior cohesion, trust and alignment.
The same applies to schools, universities, and organizations. Many companies invest in attracting the best professionals but struggle to get them working in an integrated way. An extraordinary people; rather, it is a group of people who work extraordinarily well together with one common values & purpose.
I saw just as in football, in organizations the real difference lies not only in the best players, but in the ability to transform individual talents into collective performance & results. The most effective teams share 6 fundamentals characteristics: a common purpose, clearly defined roles, accepted leadership, effective processes, trusting relationships & excellent communications. At the heart of it all is strong cooperation, which acts as an integrating element between strategy, structure, method, climate & objectives. Interestingly, these same factors are present in the teams that go the furthest in the World Cup.
