As a veteran management educator & human resource development (HRD) practitioner, I learned the takeaways from the 2026 FIFA World Cup include the necessity of bold cross-border partnerships, the critical need to modernized, interconnected digital supply chains, and the foundational realization that, even with unmatched individual talent, collaborative teamwork remains the ultimate driver of success. At the kicks off of this tournament across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, billions of football fans focused on the action on the pitch. But behind the scenes, one of the largest and most complex supply chain operations has been in motion for years. I asked students of my Graduate Business School what businesses can learn from the event of this magnitude?

I shared my observations “From merchandise and stadium infrastructure to food distribution, transportation, and broadcasting equipment, the tournament depends on millions of products moving seamlessly across borders, suppliers, and systems in real time. Mega-events like this don't just test logistics; they reveal what modern supply chains must become to operate successfully at global scale. The World Cup is a perfect example of how interconnected global operations have become. The organizers are coordinating suppliers, logistics providers, venues, retailers & technology across 3 countries simultaneously.”

I found the sum is greater than the parts: Much like successful national teams that lack megastars but outplay top-tiers opponents, organizational success hingers on complementary skills rather than individual “star” power. Teams in both sports and business face unexpected setbacks & pressures. I believe that the true champions are defined by their ability and resilience to adjust organizational strategies, tactics and maintain focus on the overarching mission.

My students realized “The scale of this World Cup highlights how critical it is for businesses to modernize the way they manage product data, labeling & supplier communications. We learned that agility & collaboration are no longer optional. Disruptions, and fluctuating demands are now constant realities.”
