A 40-year-old businessman can spend his entire day making serious decisions, handling responsibilities, and staying calm under pressure. Still, the moment his favourite team scores a last-minute goal, suddenly he is jumping from his seat, shouting at the television, and celebrating as if he had just won the championship himself.
This is the magic of football.
For these few hours, age, status, and responsibilities disappear. A football match has the incredible ability to bring out the child inside us. The part of us that still gets excited, still believes in miracles, and still finds joy in something as simple as watching a ball hit the back of the neck.
As adults, life often becomes a routine. We wake up, go to work, pay bills, solve problems, and constantly think about the future. Many of us become so used to being “responsible” that we forget what it feels like to be genuinely excited about something, but football changes that.
A single goal can turn thousands of strangers into friends. People who have never met before can hug each other, scream together, and celebrate like they have known each other for years. For 90 minutes, a football match permits people to express emotions that they usually keep hidden.
Watching football is also about the memories created around it.
Sometimes, the best moments are not even inside the stadium. They happen in our living rooms, at mamak stalls, or while sitting with friends late at night. It is the sound of someone shouting at the referee, the friend who suddenly becomes a football expert, or the family member who refuses to leave the room because “anything can happen in football."
Years later, people might forget the exact score of a match, but they will remember who they watched it with.
Football also has a unique way of connecting generations. Many fans discover their love for the sport because someone introduced it to them: a parent, a sibling, or a friend. A father sharing his favourite team's stories with his child. Friends create traditions every time there is a big tournament. These moments become memories that stay with us long after the final whistle.
Of course, football also brings heartbreak. A missed penalty, a last-minute defeat, a dream that ends too soon. Some people may wonder, “Why get so emotional over a game?” But football has never been just about 22 players chasing a ball. It represents hope, passion, loyalty, and the memories attached to every match. Fans are not only supporting a team, but also supporting the feelings and experiences that come with it.
Maybe that is why football continues to capture the hearts of millions around the world, because deep down, everyone still has a younger version of themselves who wants to cheer, celebrate, and believe that anything is possible.
Football does not make grown adults childish.
It reminds them that even as life becomes more complicated, there is still room for excitement, happiness, and a little bit of childhood magic.
